Nature, Outdoor Pursuits & Recreation
The compact nature of Aitutaki’s land-mass, in combination with the magnificent tract of lagoon area, gives visitors many opportunities to explore shore attractions, lagoon pastimes, underwater scenes and ocean-going adventures. Experience a 4WD safari tour which takes you on an island-wide discovery of history, culture and, of course, spectacular scenery.
There is also a Marine Resource hatchery which supports the efforts of national scientists to sustainably harvest and replenish sea species.
For bird watchers, hikers and keen photographers - make sure you visit Maunga Pu hill, home to a colony of small blue parrots, fruit doves, flying foxes, terns and shore birds - some of which can be found close to your luxury Aitutaki hotel accommodation at Pacific Resort.
Aitutaki's world-famous lagoon provides enthusiasts with an excellent opportunity to explore underwater sights and attractions. The lagoon scenery, viewed by boat or from the shoreline, is remarkable in its colour complexity and exquisite beauty. Up to ten separate lagoon charter operators ply the width and depths of the lagoon waters on a daily basis.
The best snorkelling & diving sites can be accessed by boat, however, there is some wonderful snorkelling available from shore immediately beyond Pacific Resort Aitutaki.
Whale watching tours are conducted from June to October. The Cook Islands waters are a popular playground for these graceful mammals who can be glimpsed from the shoreline, as well as from the safety of specialised whale-watching guided tours.
Experience the tranquility of dawn and paddle a kayak to view the sunrise over Aitutaki
